Does not play well with others
Back when my teachers still provided report cards, there were places for marks, and there were places for evaluation of character. One of the important check boxes involved “playing well with others”. After all, society is based on that fundamental. And as life progresses, one learns that it applies to a whole range of areas.
My work, for the last four decades, has involved computers. Above all, networking; playing well with others. The goal is to share information and resources. For the large part, the industry has worked hard to ensure user satisfaction. Not speed; satisfaction. When you needed to share your work, in the form colloquially referred to as ‘files”, there were ways to get things across the space.
Which is why I’m flummoxed by the “i” machines. Does the “i” stand for individual, or idiosyncratic, or idiotic? This afternoon, my goal was to share a generated house floor plan between two iPads. Same software, same network, users that wanted to get the job done. And we both came with a lot of experience. Still, actually seeing the effort from A appear on B took on an air of magic. As if mankind had just yelled “Eureka”.
I’m not impressed. It leaves me worried that the iPad may not be an ideal tool for music production; if I can’t get the song out (other than by playing it loudly across the room), that won’t spell success. I may have to go and search the net, to see how others are getting by.
