You crank or you listen

posted in technology |

I had good intentions, but the technology wasn’t ready for the moment. Earlier in the afternoon, son #2 had sent an invitation to listen to a press conference. Involving him, I think. I’ll have to ask about it, the next time we’re together.

There had been a grocery run, which saw me back in the house with a scant three minutes to go before the scheduled time. I think. I had conflicting times, due to that silly dichotomy between the 24 hour clock and the 12 hour version. The radio we had kept for years on the kitchen counter was gone, recycled early on in the moving purges. No matter; there’s a home cinema with a receiver.

And without an antenna… FM radio isn’t a popular mode in the house. I gave up and moved to plan B, which should have tuned in a simulcast from the Internet. Nothing heard. Upstairs to grab the emergency radio: if you crank, you can listen. However, while you crank, you can’t hear anything above the mechanical noise. Fail. Finally, a tablet delivered useable audio, but the content had nothing to do with son #2, or his ongoing projects. Now, all I can do is wonder.

The CBC mini series about spies during WW2 didn’t fare much better. The storyline is weak, and the twists of technology play them wrong too. Imagine sending someone to infiltrate a factory looking for a coil of wire to repair the electromagnets in your Morse key (which you use to send a randomized series of dots). Another fail. None of our intrepid crew died this evening; next week is only seven days long.
