Checkerboard chick

posted in music |

I looked at the clock, looked at the rented DVD beside the player, considered the moral penalty imposed by returning to the videostore a little bit later than I should and decided to treat myself. After all, when it’s been a full week and I still haven’t found time to watch a movie I had chosen, then perhaps it’s time to make time, if you know what I mean.

Although the clerk at the store had snickered over our choice last week, I’m glad I decided to let the show go on. In this case, a remake of a movie from back when we had little babies in the house: Hairspray with the dancin’ disco man, John T. I’ve never seen the original, although I know that Ricki Lake started with that one; she manages a cameo in the remake.

Quite a cast for something that received so little press; Michele Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Jerry Stiller, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes (who I’ve been forced to watch in dubbed versioning for years). Together, a musical that kept the whole family in front of the TV for the evening, or two full hours of it when the credits and previews are factored in. Good “wiggle your toes and nose” old school rock ‘n roll, with more dance than my poor heart could ever copy.

If you haven’t seen this one, it comes with my recommendation. Sit back, let the good times roll. Imagine a world before CFC controls, when every home had a can of hairspray on some dresser top. And great cars on the street, if that catches your eye. Besides, Michelle P. is a vamp, and John T. reprises a few seconds of his Pulp Fiction dance routine; worth the price right there.
