Basking in the glow
Today, I decided to go for more modern lighting. Forget the candle, or the Edison, or the (deserves a failing grade) CFL. For only a few hundred percent more in price point, I now own a single LED bulb. All I could afford, actually.
The willingness of the consumer (me) to accept poor replacement technology is legendary. Let’s face it: here in the frozen Canadian wilderness, a lot of effort goes into trying to stay warm. Those incadescent lamps may have “wasted” energy by transforming it into heat… we didn’t waste a single BTU!
The CFL bulbs are slow to start, short lived, apt to contaminate the surrounding space with mercury in case of breakage. What’s not to love? Include that the twirly, swirly form factor doesn’t fit many light fixtures in my home and everyone’s a winner.
Before making a budgetary commitment (to purchase a baker’s dozen) of the new LED bulbs, I decided to buy (just) one. And for a bit less than $12, taxes included, we now have a bright globe over the dining room table.
Out of the package, a slight flaw; one of the heat fins was broken. Yes, we’re back to heat and lights, but the luminance begins immediately when the switch is thrown. I bought one that is “dimmable”; it is. The colour temperature is a bit cooler than the ideal (thank you, Edison et al). However, after a full afternoon basking in the glow, I’m satisfied. Other than the price point, of course.
Time to find an online seller who can supply my newest demand.
