Intelligent startup
Oh, you’re busy overthinking the situation? Well, carry on, then. The story of my life; in lieu of doing the things I can, contemplate the details of other things. I’m learning about how to “size” a backup generator, when the installation involves a compressor motor. Esoteric stuff when my time studying engineering amounts to helping a residence mate find the lost beer under the elevator. Engineering students do things like that, and I was just tagging along out of curiosity.
But, back to the readings from this afternoon. Apparently (I have no direct experience), when a large electric motor starts up, the other devices on the household system tend to feel strangled. Lights dim, TV screens shrink, nuisance things like breakers tripping (which puts you back in the dark). My whole reason for wanting a backup generator involves “keeping the lights on”. The obvious (and costly) solution is to install a larger generator for that moment before things settle down.
Thankfully, there are online forums. One posting mentions a gadget called an Intellistart, which seems like the kind of gadget I might like to have in the whole mess of pipes and wires of a heat pump. I’ve put the word out; if it will keep the costs lower, pay the price. Simple. A pity that I have no idea what I’m talking about.
We now have another two dozen boxes (thanks to a school copying centre). When the garbage truck passes tomorrow morning and empties the “green” and the “blue”, I’ll be back to packing those boxes. Fun. OK, FUN!
