Let me improvise
Tonight’s news is ringing in my ears; a welcome change from that steady hiss that I learned to accept. Call it ‘tinnitus’ but sometimes you don’t get bells. Anyhow, a pharmaceutical treatment has been found, and now we need to convince the industry that this is the ‘next great thing’. Let me whisper in their ear, if I might.
I’m into another MOOC. This time, musical styles through history, and the first real lecture set covers the Baroque period. Before my time… One of the videos showcases a pianist that can improvise in the varied style sets of that era. I’m impressed. Improvisation is not new to me (I tend to do that when called upon to play whatever). To watch someone hear a phrase from an audience member and then spend the next few minutes reworking the theme is wonderful. I might get back to Bach sooner than I thought.
Right now, one of the big players in the cellphone industry is “down”. Across Canada, nothing but frustrated customers. I’m sure it won’t last long, and will be traced back to someone who threw a switch inadvertently. But for the record; in the landline days, this kind of thing just didn’t happen. The idea of 24/7-365 was the hallmark of the phone business. When I read that “even 911 is out”, I wonder how many of those frustrated customers were calling to express their emergency status. No phone! And after watching idiots texting on the highway (I watch from my bus window, and the idiots are not a dying species, yet), I’m almost in favour of outages. Perhaps something that targets our roadways…
