Too little, too late
I was ready. Seriously, with bells on ready, at an early hour. Alas, the storm was “too little, too late”. Enough to aggravate the situation on roads, given the “under construction” status we’ve been under for several years now. Enough to remind me how the “wind at my back” is really a good thing.
Some schools did close, and while seeking the list of who would be calm during the storm, I ran across something new. You see, finding out about the status is a game, involving radio, TV, websites and “telephone chains”. Today, I spotted a new player. A company has developed a service based on SMS (text messages to cell phones) which notifies the subscribed that staying in bed is the protocol for the day. The slow demise of local radio stations left a gap in service, and an entrepreneur has been busily signing letters of agreement with willing school boards.
The figure “seven cents” was mentioned by one administrator. Not paid by the student or the school, apparently. Ad-supported. And if it takes off, a goldmine for someone. Do the math. (# of students by 7 cents by # of storms). I love new technologies. I accept that monetizing is necessary.
The mail person was storm struck today, in passing. My little locker in the “SuperBox” at the corner of the lawn contained mail for me… and for three different neighbours. We’ve now delivered the errant envelopes. Junk mail, for the main. But it shows that a bit of freezing rain certain pushes the speed control into the “fast and sloppy” notch on the delivery truck.
