Interested in a mash up
I’ve been taking the time to listen to others in the workplace. Although all claim to look forward to retiring, some seem reticent to give up the social comfort of the workplace. I have heard similar echos in my inner circle. So here’s the question? Should I be less keen on the idea of a week that fits my interests? Is working really the summum of civilized life?
Have a look, beyond the front yard. What do those “with money” do? They flee, to places where leisure is an accepted pastime. I want to be like them, dagnabbit.
Someone in the office was extolling my wide range of interests (yes, it’s a form of praise). I had to wonder. Is having a “wide range” so unique? Do others limit their leisure to the bowling alley, or the fantasy football league? Not me. I’ve spent a lifetime exploring things that “might be fun”; the goal (retirement) isn’t just to leave my cubicle to someone younger and more interested. It’s to have time to play. Every day is Thursday, as the recent seminar leader put it.
But enough musing and dreaming of better times on the horizon. Tonight, we get some new TV: Big Bang Theory and Glee. Enough reason to stay up past my usual bedtime. When I was younger, TV shows used to do “mash ups” – Beverley Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction come to mind. Imagine a BBT/Glee combination, where Sheldon sings something other than “Warm Kitty”, and Kurt does science. It could work.
