Is sombody watching?

posted in environment |

Happened to notice a camera watching me from a window, on the way home from the bus this afternoon. Wonder what that was about?

To be precise, it looked like a generic webcam, pointed in my direction. I can’t be sure it was actually on, or watching anything at all. And, in the spirit of disclosure,  I do have a webcam pointed out of a window at my house – but it’s watching the sky! Unless a passerby was flying, my effort is meaningless. The other one; maybe I’m paranoid, but shouldn’t there be warning signs? Just musing. After all, this could be the thin edge of a surveillance wedge. Who knows how many other people are bored of making Skype calls, and have repositioned a sensor in hope of seeing… I don’t know what. People walking back from the bus stop?

At work, I’m producing documents that will never be read. Seriously. It turns out that we have a legal requirement to “archive” accounting reports. The term is filled with ambiguity (like most accounting exercises), and our decision was to take a “standard” page, in letter size. Then, I reduce the content and fit six pages onto a sheet of paper (again, letter size) and start printing the whole thing in recto verso. Twelve pages, in the space of two. It reduces documents of 6000 pages down to 500 sheets of cheap paper. Score one for the green team.

The pile of paper will be stored away in a musty basement for the next quarter century and our requirement has been fulfilled. Kind of silly, when you think about it. But, it’s the law.
