Repeat until successful
My first reaction is “Hurrah! It works!”, quickly followed by “But why didn’t it work before?” You guessed it; wireless on a laptop with Linux. Part of the mystery of the universe.
Roughly every second upgrade, I go through a similar dance. What was fine yesterday is a brick wall today. Upgrade to the latest version of my favourite distro and find a CAT-5 cable to get the upgrades. Forget wifi; it won’t happen as easily as last time. Much like my attempts to understand the SCSI interface, back when scanners and such required a card and a cable with volume. Until, one afternoon, when someone else in a forum explained that SCSI under DOS required sacrificing a cross-eyed goat. Aha! Eureka!
Keeps me interested in the process, if nothing else. Thankfully I’m not required to support anyone else in the search for success. Imagine trying to explain, over the telephone, how simply trying the same thing over and over and over again will eventually work. Goes against the grain.
On to other things. I went out for groceries in a substantial snowstorm this afternoon. Inside, chaos. No carts; I had to go out and corral my own packmule in the parking lot, while dodging SUVs. All this to get a few boxes of fancy crackers, some dates and oatmeal (yes, Date Squares for Dummies), and a couple of jars of pickles and olives. After all, the holidays require a certain balance in the diet. I’ve put the frozen bird into quarantine in a camping cooler. By the 26ht (dinner is going to be late this year), things should be at a temperature allowing stuffing and baking.
