Something involving planes, not trains
Back in 1973, a rail strike meant that I made the trip to university for the fall session by air. My first flight; Toronto to Charlottetown. I don’t claim to remember much about the particulars (it was a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar), and I was able to take photos from my window seat. But seriously, I don’t remember much else.
As a result, I’m able to watch the new TV series, Pan Am, without any flashback moments. Plus, the difference between 1963 and 1973 were vast. Right? I now have timeshifted viewing, and there is a certain CGI that wasn’t available in the original world. Too smooth, too blue, too smoke-free…
In fact, my main fascination with the series comes from the Quebec connection. Karine Vanasse, in her first US prime time role. A weekly series, where others will discover just how talented she is. This is good. I’ve enjoyed her movies, and now I’ll see how she handles the accumulated stress of a weekly gig that isn’t aimed at kids.
And in typical American form, we’ll get spies and anti-Castro rhetoric, and a focus on the climates of various cities around the globe. After all, that’s what “being a stewardess” was about… checking out the weather on the way to the next hotel. NOT.
But now I’m distracted; something involving oysters and familiar faces in the Egmont Bay region. How did we get there from a 1963 series? Not by Pan-Am. Guess I’d better go and watch something that might have genealogical implications. See you later.
