The sweet sound of silence

posted in computing, travel |

Can you put a price on peace and quiet? How about quiet, all by itself? I know what it is worth to me, based on today.

Had to spend five hours in the passenger area of a Beechcraft King Air 100, today. Work related; no vacation travel at this time of the year. And after my last session, back in June, I was determined to find an alternative to the sensation of sitting inside a washer-dryer combo. After all, I can’t get replacement for my hearing infrastructure.

For other reasons, we had a set of noise-cancelling headphones in the house. Bose QuietComfort 15. May I suggest that this product receive two thumbs up without hesitation. A miracle! Although I could hear the voices of my neighbouring passengers, there was no ambient noise. The motors were off my radar. I arrived (twice) feeling rested and ready for the rest of my day.

The only downside – my MP3 player had a dead battery, so the hit on my parade was the Sound of Silence.

As for the work aspect, some disappointment. Akin to that you get when you try shovelling the ocean away. No progress on my dossier since the last visit. This could mean more travel in my future…

I may have to reboot my computer. Things are slow this evening. No, it has nothing to do with the whirlwind speed of a turboprop plane. I’m waiting for my letters to appear, and that’s a symptom of too many loose ends in a Windows world.  Or perhaps I lack sleep.
