Starting to reduce the volume of stuff
I think I’m going to brag for a bit. After all, I’ve done something extraordinary, and I’m proud of myself. The family left me alone for the day, and I threw away some stuff!
First of all, the requisite George Carlin citation:
This is my stuff, that’s your stuff, that’ll be his stuff over there. That’s all you need in life, a little place for your stuff.
I can’t say it any better. But, the order challenge has been given. Reduce the volume of collected treasure (or else). And so with a new outlook on life, I waded into the basement (where all the good stuff is stored, though I’ve lost sight of both the stuff and the why). Moved some things into new piles and then I grabbed an armload and headed for the dumpster.
Not actually a dumpster; I’d suggested that, but the rebuttal was that it would cost too much. As if my stuff didn’t cost too much. And although I’m a firm believer in being green, and recycling and all that other virtuous claptrap, I threw the armload into the green container, which will be burned away to a small pile of toxic ash.
I had to be careful not to overfill the greenie, because we also deposit our household trash there, and the next pickup is almost a week away. Restraint. But for the record, I’ve sent two large boxes of cassette tapes to the great beyond.
It is true; I do not own a functional cassette player, and the average tape hasn’t turned in two decades. But every trip starts with a single step. Oh, and the shipping boxes for the laptops we purchased (two rounds back) are also gone. Progress leaves a mark. And the holey air mattresses are also gone. Ditto for some old Linux magazines. And a copy of O Canada, in Gaelic.
And I repaired the dehumidifier, instead of throwing it away…
Now I am bragging.
