The real pirates

posted in media |

In the brave new world proposed by the collective government of the greater North American continent, the only intellectual property to which you will have any right is…. OK, remove “only” and “any right” and you start to get the picture.

Michal Geist may be the only one that really gets it. Governments are greased by money, and the whole thing about squeaky wheel was never in question. According to analysis of the latest puddle (see Wikileaks), the Canadian government has taken a stance that gives away the bookstore, (and the movie theatre, and the radio station) to the media giants from the US. Check here for more.

Let’s ignore the whole thing about piracy, shall we? No artist ever receives enough compensation for their effort. Can’t happen, until you put a price tag on that burst of endorphins that you get when you do create something. And that’s where the copyright laws remain a giant “fail”. Because if you read the fine print, it’s NEVER been about the artist. The only one that receives value is the reseller.

Fill in the blank with the stock ticker symbol for your favourite media enterprise. No need to create anything, when you “own the rights”. And that’s why I lose respect for government leaders that “toe the corporate line”. I can’t stop you from breaking your oath of office. I can’t funnel the slush to something more useful than getting you reelected. I can cry from the rooftop that you are  a plague upon the earth.

Or do you hold the rights to that title too?
