Hectic shoppers from aisle to aisle

posted in economy, environment |

Yesterday, the opposition formed a coalition and “broke” the government. Today, in true phoenix fashion, the parties arose and began the marathon of hyperbole. Another election campaign is underway. Hold onto your hats and hide the young children.

I am sitting in near darkness, respecting my commitment to Earth Hour. Yes my laptop screen is bright enough to reset the fingertips (when I derail) and yes I’m running on battery power. A gesture, nothing more. We can’t cut the lights and go back to the dawn to dusk existence of the ancestors. We can take a moment, from time to time, to realize just how our commitment to using energy has buried any other skills we might have.

Earth Hour 2011

Remember, all it takes is a broken wire to send most of us back to basics.

The iPad now has a SmartCover. Lots of cash in return for a plastic panel with some magnetic clips. Amazing how marketing can mask common sense. However, it’s the “total ownership experience” that counts. I’ve Skyped. Netflix works. Projection is a go. The overall speed is acceptable, and the form factor is typical Apple.

Spending time in a large shopping mall, my impression is that there’s still a lot of money in circulation. The aisles were full, and nobody seemed unhappy. Not the shoppers; not the merchants. As to the need for most of the merchandise… let’s not go there. How many shoes and shirts and fancy jackets can one person wear? How many coffee machines are needed to get through a hectic week?
