Short distractions
I don’t have the time for long bursts of talent. Better to take what comes quickly, and America’s Got Talent fits that bill.
Think of this as hors d’oeuvres TV. Tasty snacks; not enough to ruin your appetite for a real meal (should one be offered). A couple of minutes per, and then on to something else. And sometimes, you can discover a new flavour among all the stale chips.
For sure, the air guitar band didn’t deserve promotion, but the choice of a Black Sabbath number was exactly what they needed, in a world where Sharon Osbourne is considered to be a judge of talent. The older woman with the hand whistling might have been better suited to an afternoon assembly in an elementary school, but when she told us “I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep tonight; I’m buzzed”, well ,we were too. Ditto for the soldier with the girl in a box. Sure, we’ve seen the stabbing a hundred times or more, but right then he had our full attention. The three judges are a talent unto themselves. Nothing like American Idol; then again, this isn’t a singing competition. Instead, the program proves that we’re all “a little bit special”.
The best moment came at the time when the winds had died down. Literally. Have you ever tried to fly a kite on a calm afternoon? Running back and forth, throwing your machine into the air and defying gravity? Well, young Conor Doran proves that sometimes it’s all about willpower. His talent is Indoor Kite Flying, and the audience was held speechless.
