No sleepy time in this office

posted in computing, politics |

One thing about working in computer support is that times are rarely dull. Think about your home computer, which you treat fairly well. Problems arise from time to time, but there is generally someone you can call.

Now escalate things a bit. Your computer isn’t yours. You use it on a day to day basis, and problems arise from time to time. You never try to fix the problem; after all, that’s what the computer support people are paid to do.

Multiply that situation by fifty, and then look at who is on the other end of the short rope. You know, the people in computer support. Guess they won’t fall asleep during the afternoon, from boredom.

I was out of the office on Friday, and today was simply twice as much as an “ordinary day”. Problems don’t go away in support; they accumulate, much like the stuff in the recup box in the basement. After all, someone will carry the blue box away. Out of sight, out of mind.

I don’t think it slowed down all day long. Coffee was inhaled, lunch wasn’t. The phone call list started down a second sheet of paper, and a StairMaster is not required for exercise when there are real stairs at both ends of the building. Ever see a “mailbox” of 1.6 Gigs crash and burn? The look of terror on the user’s face was not nice. Any idea what it’s like to reconcile a user who is spread across two network profiles? Pure amusement. After all, we build our virtual environments over a period of months, years… The IT people should be able to put it all back together in minutes, n’est-ce pas?

Some days are good, some days are exhausting. Reminder to self; a holiday or two costs more than one might think.
