Did they really keep the sky from falling?

posted in Idol, media |

Here’s a little secret: I’ve been holding up the sky. As long as it doesn’t fall down, you won’t be able to say if I’m right or wrong, now will you?

The web site Vote For The Worst is in much the same bind. For the last few years, the group behind the address has had one goal: to keep the candidate of their choice “alive” on American Idol. They’ve publicly named the candidate that they find preposterous and then showed the masses how to (perhaps) swing the online and telephone “votes” each week. The goal; to skew the results.

This season, Tim Urban has been their choice. Although the actual breakdown of voting is kept secret, someone does get sent home each week (pretty much) and despite the lack of lustre, smiling Tim has stayed around for a very long time. So much so that Simon said “What we say doesn’t really matter, because people are going to vote for you anyhow”. America voted, and until tonight Tim’s karma held up. Now he’s going home.

Who’s next?

I learned, this afternoon, that Hollywood has another Robin Hood movie ready to launch. How many times has this story been retold? One list hints at 80 plus (films and cartoons confused).  Wikipedia has yet another list. IMDB still another. My personal favourite introduced me to the music of Clannad, so it remains as “the one I’ll probably buy in a box set”.

No, I don’t own a longbow, or a set of Lincoln Green tights, but the story appeals to all of us (rich men excepted).
