It’s soap, not a diet supplement

The shampoo and hair product industry leaves me baffled. To watch the ads (where only beautiful women with long hair need apply), or read the print on the bottles (when there is nothing else around to read, not even six day old newspapers), one would believe that this was the elixir of the ages.

Check out this list:

fruit acids, vitamin B3, vitamin B6, fructose, glucose, vitamin E, jojoba, rose hips, wheat germ oil, thyme, chamomile, rosemary, oat protein, sage, soy protein…

There, proof that I do lead a healthy lifestyle. I am well nourished, and even more my hair has brilliant highlights.

Come on, folks. The stuff is soap, plain and simple. For a number of years, my father worked for Chemical Development Limited, in Ontario, where behind the walls of a very industrial building they “cooked up” the magical potions known as shampoo. The plain truth is that we are the willing dupes of the advertising industry. The base ingredients for shampoo arrive in tanker trucks, are stirred at the right temperature and then leave in tanker trucks, slightly coloured and aromatized to fool us, every time.

A test some years ago by Consumers magazine showed that simple, cheap, dish detergent did a better job of washing our dead hair, left it cleaned of those bodily oils and ready for another day.

So, kick the habit. Live better without the diet supplements. The stuff provides no nourishment, and the cost just makes the big chemical companies richer and richer and richer, so they can continue to pay for ads(where only beautiful women with long hair need apply).
