Costly conservation

posted in environment |

As cities grow, the need for clean water becomes more difficult to supply. Hence, we’re asked to rationalize our use of water, and toilet systems are notoriously wasteful. I’ve seen figures suggesting that upwards of 40% is flushed every day.

At work, some of the facilities are rather dated. We have a pair of urinals at one end of the building that autoflush every ten minutes, 24/7/365. I made a light suggestion to the building manager that we could probably handle a handle, if you get my drift. Turns out they’ve already studied a “magic eye” system, and the cost would run close to $4000. Expensive. I now understand why we’re still letting the timer waste water, instead of a magical eye, but there has to be a better way. Maybe I can find a used flusher on eBay for them…
