Requisite account of progress
Since last evening, I’ve been building a mystery box. You know, one of those projects that isn’t necessary, will probably suck more time and energy out of me than can be justified, but with one evening (no, two now) invested, on we go.
I really like things that add value, and after hearing/reading the success enjoyed by others, I decided to learn more about Asterisk@Home (AAH). The hardware needs seemed reasonable: an older computer (we have several in the basement, much to the chagrin of someone else), an interface card and a CD-ROM readily available on the Internet.
The interface card, a clone of the Digium X100P, was available on eBay. $30. Plus the time to ship it from Shanghai. Check.
An older Celeron, with a CD-ROM reader and some memory. Check.
A hard drive. Here is the first glitch. I have a box of old, small drives, all suspected of still working. Drive one: about halfway through the install, the software reports that it can’t write the partition table. Drive two: about halfway through the install, the software reports that it can’t write the partition table. Drive three: success. It appears that the drive capacity is REALLY important. 760 MB is not enough. 1.2 Gb is not enough. 4.2 Gb is… Check.
Note that while my project is still being born, I learn that AAH is old hat and that Trixbox is the new moniker. The requisite CD image is still not downloaded; the download sites keep resetting. Mystery is good, right?
So, I’ll take a sleep break here. The box has rebooted for the umpteenth time, and the web service is active, although it ignores my attempts to log in. I’ll tell you more when I’m rested.
