Small glitch to big miss

posted in environment |

Our municipal transit system is large, running close to five hundred buses at a time, so the following isn’t their fault, but it still fits into the zoo of pet peeves that live in my space.

Road construction and destruction and repair are all necessary evils. The ability to route around, if not through, such sites is part of the game, and users will learn to deal with it. Even if it means missing your connection by thirty seconds and then waiting thirty minutes.

But, what about the abuses? Today, a local restaurant that is reopening after extensive renovations received a permit to close off the street in front of the business and erect outdoor tents. Sure to bring in the dollars. Vehicles that need access to the street are being allowed in on a case by case basis. BUT, the municipal bus is being detoured around, even though it only transits once every thirty minutes. No indication to the potential passengers. No answers from the person blocking/unblocking the street on a case by case basis. Find the bus somewhere further down the road.

Remember the missing your connection by thirty seconds and then waiting thirty minutes. mentioned earlier? Perfect example.

Somebody knew that the street would be blocked; the barricades were supplied by the municipality. Same people that supplied the permit to close a public byway for a commercial party. Think they could let their transit system in on the secret next time?
