Batteries are an option

posted in technology |

The green part of my soul believes in rechargeable batteries. From my earliest experience with a simple D cell, placed on the warm part of the stove (warm, not hot) for a couple of hours, to give just a little more go power. To a drawer full of NiMH cells, rated for meaningless sums like 1500 mA hours.

Realistically, at any given time, all of those cells will be stone dead. The charger will be under a pile of papers over on the counter, and the plan for the weekend involves cameras and a GPS and someone’s GameBoy and a car trip that will last for a LONG time. I’ll manage to get one or two pairs of cells ready, and then the recycle will repeat itself.

How green is a world where the cells are left in a state of discharge? An array of unusable power. A reminder that we are more dependent than ever on “juice” for all our toys. That reminds me: where is the car inverter, so I can run the charger while we are in there for the LONG time.
