Sometimes an apology is in order
Once in a while, even a friend has to take the time to say “I’m sorry…”. The day online began with a warning; This site may harm your computer. Or something else that involved taking risks. I wasn’t the one with the screen alert, and my role was that of the passive technician. Something calming: “You might have an infestation of spyware. Run some diagnostics”. There, my job was done; back to more important things like preparing the first coffee of the morning.
By the time my spouse had finished the hard drive scan (with nothing of terrible import found), we were in to early afternoon, and it was time to go shopping for the ingredients required for a good batch of curried pork (no fla…). Life online was back to normal, wherein you search a little and you read a little. Repeat as necessary.
The story posted on Slashdot around the time we were dishing up big bowls of steamy noodles and curried pork was both unique and apologetic. Due to a human error, all Google searches were returning the warning message about malware for a short time this morning. Nothing to panic over; someone had missed a beat while scripting, and suddenly everything appeared to be dressed for the worse. I think that this is wonderful. Not only is there proof that infallibility is just a theory, but those involved were good enough to admit their error. Try to find behaviour that is as responsible from some of the other search engine wanna be’s.
