For some, it is just too loud

posted in health, music |

They were different times, apparently. Right now, the vaccine question rears huge on the social horizon. In certain areas, you are “for” or “against”. No middone (or common) ground. Now, I’ve been alive long enough to have received a number of important inoculations. And for the life of me (because, due to those inoculations, I have life).

Were people as divided, when smallpox or Polio were brought to bear? Did people fight against the idea of living free from terrible disease? I seem to remember the whole process as simple. We lined up, we received a needle (or a sugar cube, depending on the methology). Then we went home. I never witnessed insane hatred of the bad made good through the wonder of science.

Believe me, I am proud to wave my provincial pass. It proves that science is on my side. And, for the record, I have had no side effects (other than relief) over “getting my shots”. It means that I’m probably going to make it through another long winter. Yes, I’ve lost relatives to the pandemic. And I have a suspicion that their demise was due to the waiting time, not the prophylactic.

This next story is presented with an air (sad air) of whimsy. In Ontario, in a small town that prides itself on keeping the bagpipes front and center, there have been complaints. Too noisy, for some. OK, I admit that in an enclosed space, the pipes can be a touch loud. While in university, I remember someone that used to play, out on the football field. And yes, we could hear him inside the residence, with the windows closed. But did we complain? No… Somewhere in that small town (Fergus, are you listening), a small group of grumps have lost their way.
