I wonder if he wonders
Just came in from putting the dog out, so that he could go on fox watch. In passing, that is quite different from watching Fox; I wouldn’t force a dog to do that. Anyhow, it made me pause and realize just how dependent he is on the rest of the household for everything. He can’t scoop kibble, he can’t fetch water from the kitchen faucet, he doesn’t know how to reach the yellow bags of assorted treats that we store high over his head. We really serve his needs.
And I wonder if he ever considers the things that could go really wrong. What would he do, as an example, if one of the hot water tanks exploded and made a noise that he couldn’t decipher. What about if we succumbed to the latest threat, involving vaccinations. Not his – ours! As of this afternoon, we have (both) received our shots. He wasn’t consulted. Yes, he came along, the first time, but today he wasn’t even invited to chaperone. And yes, as a side note, both of us wanted to be vaccinated; we don’t watch Fox, either.
I’ll take him aside, just before going to sleep (he does that, most of the time, but I’ll try to plan the moment carefully). I’ll explain we will arrange for his best care, if ever something like a water tank does explode. Or if that errant Chinese rocket ship lands here. He’s a big boy and a good boy, and his humans care for him greatly. I’m sure he’ll find the reassurance sufficient to let him go to bed without any stress.
