A different reward level

posted in health, pets |

Isn’t that special! We now share something (other than being an island) with New Zealand. Heading back into lockdown (the polite term for an upgraded quarantine).

We get our news about public health problems via videoconference. This has been a very busy week, and getting called to the listening post late on a Saturday never bodes well. There’s been an uptick in the virus count, with six new cases today. I can’t speak to those folks in the antipodes, but for us we will have to forget about leisurely dining at a restaurant. And hockey games. Not that those figured high on my todo list.

While watching one of “our” foxes leaving the lane, I did remark that it halted and looked both ways before heading off along the asphalt. In simple terms, smarter than your average dog about imminent danger.

My dog leads a very simple life. In sharp contrast with the mutts belonging to Lady Gaga, I guess. While her hounds were out for a leashed walk with their personal trainer, a van stopped. The door opened, a shot was fired (wounding the walker), and the dogs were kidnapped. Shades of 101 dotty dalmatians! The wounded walker is recovering, and the dogs have been returned. What makes the case especially newsworthy was the reward of $500K that was offered.

We don’t know if the reward has been paid. We don’t know what made these particular dogs so important. Not their looks, for sure! And now that the danger has passed (or has it?), what will be next? I’ve had a heart to heart talk with our mutt, and I’ve assured him that we will not be putting the family fortune up as a reward, should he go missing. Love has its limits.
