Quenching the retail fires
Once upon a time, we would line up just after midnight, outside. At dawn, the most magical day of retail commerce in a calendar year would begin: Boxing Day. Those of you who are younger believe that Black Friday is the day of peak commerce (it might be; I don’t have the supporting numbers). But for many of us, if we wanted a big ticket treasure (think large screen TV), then the 26th was circled in red.
Now, this is not a year like others, but I am surprised. Due to local regulations, the stores will be closed until the 29th. Almost too many no-money days to compute. I already have a large enough TV (hanging on the wall), but it appears that the fire in the belly of consumers has been quenched.
I’ve been recycling those weekly rolls of flyers directly into the green/black bins for months. Don’t need no reminders to buy. Maybe I’m old, but I’ve managed to get most of the stuff I require. Actually, that confirms it: I am old. And there’s always Amazon. Confession: I did order some more toner for the printer (over 5 years since the last time), and a filter for the fridge. Total dollar value was enough for free shipping to kick in. I can wait the two weeks.
Our loaner dog is in the house. Even with my eyes closed, I can tell who is at the drinking dish. And they are learning to share the bed (as long as I’m in the middle). More than one pet wouldn’t be impossible, says the crazy side of my brain.
