Preparing for every eventuality

posted in technology |

I believe that the necessary tools should be available where needed. The where is the key word in that sentence.

Take, for example, your car and booster cables. In an ideal world, every car would come with one cable on board; you don’t plan on needing a boost, and having the cable at home in your garage is simply frustrating. On a happy aside, our cable is now in the car…

Or the right wrench to “torque” your wheel nuts. I hit a small glitch, when my wrench was loaned out. Happily, it came home last night, and I did an “under the lights” round of the wheels. They were loosy-goosy, as the saying goes, and that has been rectified.

Next on my list of things to store IN the car will be a jug of windshield wiper fluid.

The average city bus passenger doesn’t have to think about such things. Yes, I miss my big limo. But when my bus assured my daily displacements, I didn’t have to think about “vehicle maintenance”. That’s why I paid to ride. Now, on my own in the wilderness, the level of personal responsibility has been notched up. I must call son #2; he should begin ownership of a car sometime next week, and I’ll be happy to provide the kind of guidance that comes with my mantle of parenthood. We’re moving beyond basic bicycle maintenance here.

Perhaps I could author a small handbook, with the target audience being kids who don’t have their parent in a handy side pocket. I’ll start work (on a catchy title), soon.
