My role as a backstop

posted in economy |

Already mid afternoon, and all seems well. That is, the electricity is on, the rain is barely aggressive, and the breeze is about right for an autumn afternoon. I want to get these observations out there, before things go south (or is it north).

“Our” storm is of scarce interest to others. In fact, the national media might give us mention, after the fact. Not in the hours where things are ramping up. I did check on the comments about our weather on FB: all local. I mean, when you get 81 comments, and nothing has actually started…

South, the whole conversation revolves around a decision by one party to “stack” the supreme court. Fifty years? Nothing to see here. Politics can be fun to watch, but a train wreck on the deck of a shipwreck? Please, can we find a new way to do things. Or rather, can THEY find a new way. Up here, in Canada, we seem to avoid such disasters.

One of my kids is caught in the mire of employment insurance. For those who have real jobs, there are many that depend on tips to get through the month. The EI people are fully aware. And when the paper records for “your share of the tips” are lost in the shuffle; tough. The system has other priorities, and if you don’t have any money, well. You should get a “real job”, in the civil service as an example. I’m watching closely, and am fully prepared to backstop the kid. Can’t have any of my descendents starving, right?
