Ready for a new semester

posted in ham radio |

In this era of shopping online, the absence of a tracking number means that the delivery is unexpected. Like this afternoon, when I heard the van door slam on another of the anonymous fleet that services this territory (on behalf of Purolator). A box, with my name on the label.

I now have another major piece of my radio station puzzle, with the arrival of a modern VHF/UHF transceiver. Not so new that it bleeds details (the model was released about a decade back), but something that is reliable, if I can trust  the hundreds of reviews I’ve read recently. I started shopping back before the world stopped in its tracks, and I had to spend a lot of mental energy confirming my choice. There is a lot of choice…

Anyhow, over the next couple of weeks, I’ll program in the frequencies for this area, along with any ancillary codes. As well, the radio can cover most of the public service frequencies used locally, so I’ll be ready just after the close of the lobster harvest. Oh well.

My choice of radio also offers the possibility of “playing” with the orbiting satellites. Again, a lot of study, in order to know the where and the when (azimuth/elevation/frequencies). Like any good hobby, amateur radio is one for those who accept that study is part of the game. I have a couple of different antennas already in place, so now I have to listen/call/log. Should be fun. And if ever we get back on the road, this radio will serve as my link to elsewhere. Hey, it even has a GPS! Modern toys for modern boys (and girls). The dog is disinterested.
