No launch today

posted in technology |

I must not blame the weather, when my Internet gets useless. Fog and showers is not supposed to bring my (wired) feed to its knees. Note that I will not call the Bell hotline; too insulting to hear that I simply need to reset the ADSL and my router. I already have. No, this comes down to a crippled system, where the company is able to bill for service that is intermittent and slow. Are you listening?

I did go out today, long enough to purchase gasoline for the lawn mower and some milk. Did me good, to see that things locally look the same. Some fields are prepped for the seeder. An act of agricultural faith. At the cash register, the local chatter turned to how this is going to be a “bad year” for all.

Found myself seeking a countdown this afternoon, as the Musk folks prepared for their first real astronaut launch aboard SpaceX. I did find my channel, just as they hit the “postpone” button until next weekend, due to inclement weather. For what it’s worth, the capsule looked comfortable, and the sight of a tall rocket with the gantry still in place brought back memories from a lifetime ago. Hard to believe how little progress has been made, over a half-century. Why, based on the hoopla of the late ‘60s, we should have had scheduled service to Mars. Instead, we’re still watching the clouds. I mean, I’m not a rocket scientist, but shouldn’t all of this be routine by now? I guess not. Tune in on Saturday for the next, exciting chapter in our serial.
