My newest word

posted in economy, education, health |

Here’s a word that I haven’t used before: perplexion. I checked, and it is a real word, and it is the right word for the moment. Because, you see, I am trying to “wrap my head around” the sudden belief that everything is OK, out there.

For the last ten weeks, I’ve stayed very close to home. After all, those in the know said that it would be better, given this new risk to public health. I’m not going to quibble; my expertise in public health is minimal. If there’s a risk, why take it. And so, like almost everyone else, my four walls have been a refuge.

Now, just because the “economy” is stumbling, we’re getting the chorus of all clear. Most of the politicians and business buddies (they’re closely linked) want the money to flow (into their pockets, to be sure). No offer to up the ante, against the possible risk of (dare I say it) death by disease. No, money will be sufficient to bury the odd body.

Now, hold on! Some jurisdictions are using the school children to take point. Others are trying to assure me that I need someone to cook for me who has a proper restaurant and a proper debit machine. I might not be allowed to go camping, but fries are on offer.

I’m puzzled (see perplexion). If I get sick, and by extension, die… doesn’t that mean less clients going down the road. I really wish we had something more like a vaccine to pump up the tires on the commerce car.

For the record, I don’t have any intention to return to the workplace, but I hope I won’t lose any friends or neighbours in this rush to restart the money machine.
