Counting words

posted in ham radio, history |

Neat visit from the neighbours, this afternoon. Two dogs. Our own ball of fur was over the top happy; I guess he doesn’t figure that the ordinary visitors (humans) are there for him.

I think I might have a solution for my PTT switch. Found something on Amazon that was both dirt cheap and came with free shipping. From China, so I’ll have to wait for a few weeks. Probably mount the switch into the top of an aspirin bottle (the plastic type) and count my saved money. Won’t be as “fancy” as something ordered from away, but I can claim I made part of my station.

An outpouring of tributes for a former university professor and chaplain. Yes, I knew him; despite my never having taken a single science course, I “scored” one of the rare summer positions in the department, and in a small school you see folks, often. Good man.

I spent part of the afternoon reading a training manual from a different era. A Navy guide for radio operators looking to get a higher grade of pay. Actually contained little that I hadn’t learned during my brief spell in commercial radio, which shows that my teachers had the material in hand. Counting words is a lost art, now that we no longer rely on telegrams as a way of communicating our affairs. And as for the levels of “secrecy”(hint: in radio, impossible to keep), I had those drilled in class, since we might give away the plan to board an errant schooner. Funny the things I remember, four decades later.

WordPress comes with a post counter, and it seems that I’ve hit the five thousand unique posts; I’m rather proud of that.
