Rewatching means learning

posted in genealogy, ham radio |

Watched a particular video for the second time, and actually learned something I needed to know: I’ve been trying to “get my head around” the mechanical structure of a loop antenna. When one YouTube mentor showed the inside of the matching box, I suddenly realized that I could build one of those, once the proper parts were available. And so I’ve placed my order.

I’m going to try experimentation. It costs about 25% of the price for a factory built model, using the same parts. My share of the cost will come from purchasing some odds and ends (like a plastic box for $20 on Amazon), along with a fistful of extra connectors off eBay and getting a selfie stick. No, I do not intend to capture my profile; this piece provides the backbone of the antenna. Here, a picture of where I want to be, once I’ve done the mechanical assembly.

Now, with absolutely no experience in using a magnetic loop, this might be disappointing. Or not. Lots of other folks seem to be getting “out” using QRP levels and a bit of patience. I can do that.

Had the house to myself, while others went for live theatre. A chance to take on a sudden genealogy project. Son #2 has a friend that might be related. With the names of two parents, I’ve turned it into a fairly complete family tree, and confirmed that one grandmother is a third cousin to my spouse’s grandmother. That counts as close family, in the North American context. I look forward to tracing more lines.
