Flames 1 / History 0

My personal “bucket list” just lost a line. Today, after eight hundred years, the city of Paris has lost its cathedral. Think about that number for a moment. When Champlain came to check out Canada, the Notre Dame de Paris was already four centuries old. My knowledge of the building comes from its inclusion in various movies. I know, from others, that it contained a lot of priceless art. And now…

Here in America (meaning the continent), we tend to watch our TV programs in burst of thirty minutes counting ads in. And then we wait for a week, and pick up the story where it left off (or at least the list of characters). Great for teaching continuity, but if you miss a week, you were left with a hole in the storyline. Enter box sets and the Internet. Now we can “binge”.

Still a little old school, here. I haven’t indulged. Oddly, this evening, I sat down and watched a whole season of Some Girls, out of England. Their season length is six, so it wasn’t exactly a marathon. I had some good giggles, once I wrapped my brain around the accents. International English might be a thing on the BBC, but this series is more for the common folks. Believe me, you’ll never get the humour/vocabulary past the censors of American TV.

About a week ago, after spotting the announcement for a new book on tracing Irish genealogy, I went all Amazon and ordered a copy. Afraid it could take months, coming from across the ocean and all, but the package showed up today. The book looks good, based on a cursory inspection. Study time ahead.
