Lists
Among my library (in storage), I own a set of really valuable reference books: The Book Of Lists c.1977 and subsequent volumes. Why I point this out is that we’re entering an important season, for those who dabble in trivial pursuits. On TV, a parade of lists, dealing with the bests of from the past year. Perhaps not as useful as something from the upcoming 365, but still enough to hold my interest for short bits of time.
I need to know what others find interesting. The best songs? Yes. The best movies. Doubly so. The best places to eat, or visit; those have a longer shelf life. But that song! I hate when I miss valuable cultural content, and the lists assist (me). I can make up for weeks, even months of inattention. As a person that watches IMDB in advance of watching a film, I’m a follower. It doesn’t bother me.We’re fortunate, what with the amount of historical content now available. I certainly didn’t catch the best movies from the 30s, at the time. I can, now. And there’s a plus. With all of the names players now deceased, I can catch up… sort of. I’m going to run out of time, but I can go out as an interested spectator.
The poor dog. He hears things that we never register. He also hears things that we can safely ignore. Did the doorbell just ring (on TV)? Is there a truck reversing into the driveway (on TV)? We don’t have to prepare for invaders; he does.
