Inspired by Jenga?

posted in economy, sports |

Word just in from the Games, where an athlete has been accused of doping. The sport?  Curling. Brings a new optic to the catch phrase “Hurry, hard”.

Mind you, there are good moments in curling as well. When the Homan team clinched their win (at 4 am this morning, by my clock), against Switzerland,  life was better. Yes, I was watching; I’m Canadian, and it’s what we do. Sleep is not an option. And I’ll be back in my place for the next game (in about ninety minutes)

In Japan, the decision to construct a skyscraper, 350 m tall, from wood can only be the result of one thing: a Jenga tournament, gone off the rails.

We’re waiting for (another) change in the weather. This time around, rain. And temperatures rising to 11C. Can we have a green winter? Yes, we can.

I live where “fast Internet” is an oxymoron. My speed tests are consistent. Here’s a graphic (provided by someone else) comparing the speeds available from two of the major players in the game. Same place, roughly the same time (six minutes apart is not significant). And yes, my provider doesn’t measure up well.

In Montague, the announced opening of a microbrewery shouldn’t surprise anyone. After all, the economy of the ’10 decade is floating on a sea of craft ale. However, this is a town of 2,127, and the nearest competitor is 400 m away.  The business plan for the “new kid on the block” must be an interesting study in how not to identify a rival beforehand. We’ve seen this behavior before now. Fro-yo?
