No effect

posted in politics |

Winning a game is not attributable to the spectators. If “my team” won, this morning, it had nothing to do with my decision to leave my warm bed and take up a sentinel position before the big screen. There; I’ve said what I had to say. Now, my decision to stay up until the next game begins (in two hours) will likewise have no effect on the outcome of the match.

Getting up early, staying up late; in the middle, an evening of trivia at the neighbourhood centre. I learned the name of the author of “To Kill A Mockingbird”, which shows that not all inessential  knowledge will still be available fifty years after the moment. I blame Google!

My team (not the same as the team in the first instance) came in third. I can accept that as a consequence of playing “pickup”, where the team is defined by who happens to sit at the table. If I was really involved, we’d make a team, and get jerseys, and hold regular practice. How do you train for trivia? I’m not going down that road.

Elsewhere in the world, (OK, Ontario), the leadership race for the opposition just took a new twist. The former leader, who resigned suddenly under a cloud of innuendo, says that he didn’t resign. That the documents were faked. That the campaign to choose his replacement is unnecessary, wrong even. I’m looking forward to seeing how this “plays out”, given the approach of an election (weeks away). Will the membership (and the public) make the “right choice”, or will their role as the Loyal Opposition continue, like a bad dream?
