Calendar use is optional

posted in technology |

If you received a letter, mailed on 31/03/2006 about something that would happen on 23/03/2006 via a letter dated 09/11/2005, would you be better informed? I didn’t think so. The skill of reusing an electronic document is laudable, but only if the user is enough on top of things to check the various date fields before sealing the envelope.

I guess that the days of overdraft protection and the general demise of cheque-writing have untrained many of us in the use of dates. We live far too close to the aberrant southern nation where date formats swim constantly upstream, like demented salmon, against the rest of the world. Our computers may or may not use the same format from program to program. Our form designers are not always conscious of the confusion. The Y2K “scare” taught us nothing…

There, my diatribe for the day. Date optional.
