Less than best travel choices

posted in travel |

Obligations, particularly those of a family variety, see me lose my common sense. Travel is best done without deadlines. Forcing it into the day before a major holiday, in an ice storm followed by a snow storm? Madness.

We resigned our tenancy in the hotel, crossed the city to gather son #3 and then headed down the highway. Weather deteriorated to the point where running out of “wiper juice” was important. And when we put the sticky ice behind us, the snow started. The roads across two provinces had an unexpected volume of traffic, and the crowds in the various service centres forced our break into late afternoon. Little matter. All that counted was arrival at destination.

A family meal, a lot of idle chatter around the kitchen table with siblings and progeny (son #1 had also arrived); all good.

The dog is holding up well to the stress, since his favourite spaniel is also on site. Add in a few snowbank tours and life in the canine sense makes sense.

I’m still requiring cough syrup to calm the noise, so we grabbed stuff from a pharmacy enroute just before (their) closing time. Ditto for some mediocre beer from The Store for The Kid.

Now we wait to see where we sleep. After a long day, I’m easy… at this point a floor will be great. Or a car seat. I bet someone will offer me comfortable accommodation, what with my senior sibling status.

And tomorrow I’ll go back to being a tourist in my old high school town, even though the institute is long gone.
