The concerts have begun

posted in music |

Suddenly, it’s summer. The first rescue of swimmers on the North Side. The nightly parades of foxes with offspring, criss-crossing the roads. And musical performance. Winter forces a hiatus… a hibernation. Now that the tourists are returning, so are the concerts.

Locally, the two week Festival of Small Halls has started. We were off, this evening, to a new venue. And even better, to see a group that I only know from their recorded music and YouTube presence. Còig was as good as I had hoped. Two hours, give or take, of technical excellence.

I live in an area where the fiddle is king. This was one notch up; young performers, the age of my own sons, with the ability to change tempo and key that would leave any classically trained performer tongue-tied. This wasn’t one part harmony; this was four (ignore the name as an artifact of their history). For me, the only downside was the decision to give stage time to some very young dancers. Not the best fit.

I’m going to have to try playing my low D flute backwards, just to see if I can.

And when the evening was done, with all the attribution of door prizes in the form of small bags of potatoes, with all the anticipation of a CD launch without the requisite media, I was still satisfied. We have other concerts marked on our kitchen calendar, but this might be the musical highlight of the summer. And that isn’t a disappointment. Good is still good. Great is still great.
