Details, nothing more

posted in food, genealogy |

Well now, that was slower than I remembered. I had reason to install Adobe Reader this evening. On a virtualized XP system… the job is done, without hiccups, but my beard feels longer.

Tried some frozen hamburger patties on the BBQ this evening. Not frozen at home by me; these were the commercial variety. Who knew that you could get the Harvey’s version of a burger in the safety of your own home. No claim to “more flavour” on this run. Just convenient. The dog seemed jealous that he wasn’t included in the count.

And, in my ongoing quest to map my forebears, a breakthrough. Over the years, I’d heard that one of my “great-greats” had come to the area via a Cape Breton connection. On another page, I had a name. Turns out that while skimming pages from a local history book, I spotted something that has good fit for both of those details. The family name was slightly mis-spelled. The first names were out of order. The birth date was “off” by three years. Details, nothing more.

Remember, back in the early 1800’s, this part of the Island had a population counted in dozens… OK, hundreds. Certainly not the thousands of modern times. And once you remove the MacDonalds from your equation, everything is more manageable. I’m not willing to commit this latest find to stone, but the odds are in my favour. And in family tree calculations, it doesn’t always get better with time. I’m going to pen this daughter/father/grandfather find into its proper place, and move along.
