Harnessing a natural talent

The dog has found another place to dig a hole. Worse, she has help and a model (albeit, one with a shovel). You see, seasonal decorating has begun in the neighbourhood. Not wanting to be the only house on the block (not counting the grouchy couple several doors down, who don’t believe that such efforts have meaning in this age) to be undecorated; orange and black stuff hanging from the tree, we turned the responsibility over to the one who profits most.

If this had been a real emergency

Several weeks ago, son #3 and dog #1 (they’re both unique individuals, but the canine member is the sole representative of the species in our household, so perhaps the numbering isn’t necessary) went for a run on the beach. At sunset. Think of a beautiful scene from a movie, except that the accumulation of wrackweed doesn’t photograph well. Enough artsiness… the dog and the boy had a good time, there was no intervention by the coast guard cutter and they came back before moonrise.

In the beholder’s eyes

Throughout written history, beauty has been a topic of choice. We know the names of historic beauties going back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. We write songs and poems, even full books, on the subject. We also accept that every coin comes with two faces: beautiful and ugly. No insult value, that’s just the way it is.

Just remain quiet until later

Man can’t fly worth beans. I’m not talking about getting into one of those new-fangled flying machines here. Rather, about how we can get all two feet 6o.96 cm (two feet) off the ground, but then our good friend gravity kicks back in.  Free fall,  maybe; free landing, rarely.

In other new stories we’re following

The importance of any news story depends on your proximity to the situation, either physically or emotionally. That’s what allows us to scan through the alphabet soup of the television at suppertime without too much stress (normally). It also provides us with ample small talk for the water cooler, should you happen to have one in your community. I have a news story from last night. I was not party to the story, but I was in both physical and emotional proximity, I am taking ownership. Consider me as the reporter.

Spill a little

I love the images that the word spill can set off: spilled milk, or worse (spill the wine). Spilling the beans. Spilling rain. Or the one I inadvertently went through this evening: spilled grapes. It could have been a disaster.

Remotely useful

Another holiday season is over. The return to the office was necessary, as my personal economic model enjoys those periodic injections of capital. No money, no toys. Besides, everyone is so happy and friendly and willing to ask simple questions that it’s clear the season’s endomorphin dose has not yet sunk to those troubling December levels.

It’s too early for this

During vacation, my alarm clock is in suspended animation. Don’t want to see it or hear it. Let daylight do its intended job. Alas, things are not always as simple as that. My sleep can be interrupted too easily by other “details”.

A useful trick

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Probably untrue. Dogs and tricks go well together. It all depends. I am admittedly ambivalent about where the dog and the trick should meet; after all, not all tricks are necessary or useful. Think about it.

Santa shouldn’t wear gloves

Now that Black Friday has passed, and the full Christmas shopping season is upon us, it’s time for the visits with the store Santa. Our kids are past that happy point in all our lives, but the willing victim today was the dog. Sometimes, things just don’t follow the script.
