My moor mystery
Many years have passed since high school. Still, there is a deep mystery associated with English class. As off to those teachers that were willing to spend weeks trying to convince adolescent males that this was even relevant. The people decipher abbreviated names. But, a deeper mystery than even that. Who were the Brontes?
I cannot say, for sure, if I studied one or two novels. I think that Wuthering Heights was in there, but as for Jane Eyre, not too sure. And what was a moor?
Hats off to the curriculum team that got this one by the sniff test. Did they have too many copies in the library, and were they hoping for attrition through abuse. Books out the window, for example. Or abandoned on the city bus. And what was a moor?
I will never know. Hardly see any of the old gang, so I cannot compare memories. I did not know, until recently, that the sisters wrote books as individuals. It was just something filed under B, while I moved on to more important material. Math class had irrelevance, but English classes were held on an almost daily basis. Was this a way of padding out the schedule, with a team of tenured teachers?
I fear that the movie versions, then as now, will not provide enlightenment. This might be something from a cultural bias, and only in some future era will the schools offer apologies for their excesses. There are many mysteries in education, but the Bronte family might be the ultimate puzzler. Who or what was a moor? Is it dangerous?
