There is something about the river
Let’s take a few minutes, and spend some time in sllent contemplation of the people that deserve to be top tier. Not politicians, or kings. Not athletes. Not the religious icons (although society tries hard). My vote goes out to musicians. Specifically, composers.
The “good ones” do a decent job of achieving immortality, as we know it. Bach? Still a voice after almost three centuries. The Beatles? Fewer years, but more fans. Go ahead, pick a third one, so we can make an even row on the shelf.
I’m considering watching a special on the life and times of The Bruce. I lack familiarity with his full catalog, but I have been sampling the tasty bits for decades, literally. And he holds up well. I’m actually keen to watch the new interview, just to learn a bit more. Genius deserves my attention.
And if you think I’m going to skip my regular time of sampling? Not a chance. I don’t have emough years left to sample all the good stuff. Have to accept that some tasks are impossible.
But, back to The Bruce. I have a memory of riding on a summer school bus, where the youth were deep in discussion about “The River”. I didn’t know the reference, but I did go back to residence and find someone who had an LP on hand. Not my preferred style. However, it pushed me to expand my musical horizon outward. And now, decades later, I can see why it was popular. Still. Did I mention genius? I’ll go and find that interview.
