Passed us at high speed
Went into town, this afternoon. Just an hour or so. Came back with several impressions.
First of all, the dog seemed stressed to see us back. As near as I can tell, there is no stress during our absence. He stores it away, sleeps comfortably, and then acts out for our return. Odd way of dealing with life.
The storm felled a large number of trees. I’m going on hearsay. Didn’t actually see the trees. I am certain that remediation is underway, and it will require a short lifetime. I won’t see that part, either.
Not sure if the day offered anything else. I mean, other than the chance to touch base with family members that I hadn’t seen in years. Not a lifetime. I can tell the difference between short time periods and “a lifetime”.
We were passed, at rather high speed, by three military trucks. Did they learn, during their pre-mission briefing, that we do run out of roads here. No need to race, when the road will end just up aheard. The drivers are unfamiliary with our short distances, or the vehicles have only two speeds (stop and go). How did we know they were non-civilian. Paint. They have this oddly green, flat paint that would never catch a customer’s eye on the sales lot. Probably here for that post-storm cleanup. Our version of a war zone, with less collateral damage. I did not see any downed home. No shell holes. Definitely not like what I remember from war movies. Due to the high speed, I could not see if the clothing was also drab green. My fault, for not waving my arms and attracting unnecessary attention.
