Waiting for darkness
This has been a day of quiet contemplation. Not silent, because my jury rigged system has the freezer in the garage keeping away the spoilage demons.
Just before supper, yesterday, as we prepared burgers, the propane went dry. Seven days. A new household record. Darkness was absolute, until they found the bag of tea candles, and we deployed an amazing cross section of oddly shaped flashlights. Once the meal ended, and it was clear that there would be no miracle of the lights, I went to bed. To sleep. Perchance to dream of the return of the grid circuit.
I didn’t want to waste daylight hours, and the solar panels were arrayed on the deck to give the battery box a chance. All day. Not making headway on the battery charge, but the freezer is on, so I’ll call it even.
Outside, the roar of chainsaws. A lot of dead trees that will repurpose as firewood this winter. I won’t claim to seeing the activity, but the sounds are real.
There is no internet until I do a second round of jury rigging, so the post might be a bit delayed. I’ll make the date and time look as if this was a normal day in autumn, but you will know that it just isn’t so. No scam calls, no deliveries (except for an envelope containing tickets to sell on behalf of a local community organization. No late-season tourists; I suspect that after the first hour of downed trees, the view lost any appeal. Maybe the work crews will carry on, filled with zeal.
