A basic white on white, with white highlights

posted in Uncategorized |

If someone asked me to describe where I live, based on the colours outside, I could do so. In a generalized way. I’d rely upon features that are familiar. Like the ocean, and the line of trees, and the field. But, colour would be included. No concrete jungle, ocally.

However, we do have a few conditions that bear mention. If you come around here, almost any night, I I can use the absence of colour adjectively. The phrase “the dark of night” is real, when the moon is benind clouds. Look outside, and wonder if there’s anything beyond the windows. I don’t mind. It’s temporary. Tomorrow will be a different view.

And, in sharp contrast, we have days like today. I did take a photo, but it would be wasted. Imagine a white sheet of paper. No details. That’s where we are, today. White on white, with white highlights. Nothing else. Today is a storm day, and we were warned in advance. Stay home. No need to be anywhere else. In fact, when someone posted on social media about being stuck at a given address, the mother replied, succinctly. “I guess you have a new home, for now”. If you were silly enough to go to a friend’s place in a whiteout, you now belong to them. Tomorrow, we’ll see if things have changed.

That storm might have a few surprises, before morning. Much higher winds. Some freezing rain. All the weather elements of a classic nor’easter, including winds from the north-east. It’s a thing. I guess  that it was a deadly moment, back in the days of sails. Right now, the lane is being “blown”, but we’re staying put. It may be a Saturday night, but the party is here. A quiet party, with little dancing. Part of getting older.

Right now, the only real worry is about wheter the lights will go out. Before my bedtime. I am prepared, sort of, but I really hope that we escape that little bit of discomfort.
