Another check mark on my prepare for winter list: the personal watercraft has been washed and hung up to dry. It’s a kayak thing; won’t work with a lobster boat, for example. Yes, I know. I already did this, but the weather turned summery and she who paddles got back out on the ocean. For the record, the odour of salty streams was there, as I hunkered down in the garage to rub and scrub. Also, having a heated garage with a cement floor allows one to do the“job”, indoors.

There it is! A forecast of iffy weather, with a lot of rain. Meanwhile, just across the way (the water), a promise of a full blown snow storm, with high winds and enough snow to require assistance. So, what will it be? The stretch of open water may be insufficient to stop the snow swirl. Only a couple of days to go. Best get in some bread and milk, just in case.

When the analysis arm of the media tells us that things are probably going to get wort (all topics confounded), we know they are playing “crystal ball:. No big deal. What scares me is when they add details to the back story that show how poor we really are at planning.

Until tomorrow, the kitchen is a bit darker. We have light fixtures, mounted beneath the cupboards. And, until now, we have paid little attention. Cue the darkness.

Every year, the same reacion: Look, that might be snow! It won’t stay just yet, but it brings all of the other items on the to do list into focus. Find your boots and mitts. Plaan to shift the tires. Find the scraper. Get timcets to a southern location (that one doesn’t happen in our family, but it could be a plan).

Don’t look for me on Instagram. I’m not an influencer, I’m not a model and I really look uncomfortable when holding a fork near the dessert place. Plus, desserts (pie vs cake vs a fruit salad with an excess of melon) are too sweet.

What about the medley? As in, the art form of…
I have come across a musical masterpiece, recorded somewhat more than a year ago ago. In it, a selection of twenty songs (excerpts, to add precision) from the back catalogue of the Beatles. Familiar name, familiar tunes. Covering nine years of creative mastery. My opinion. Here’s the thing: everything meshes, as if this was according to some greater plan. You might not find your “best song ever” in there, but you won’t find any damp spots either.

In the dark, we look for the worst. Last evening, as the sun went down, the wind arose. And it blew, all night long. Removed any possibility of getting any rest, as the worst was visualized. Would we lose shingles, or siding? Would the compost bin get agitated and dumped in the lane? What about monsters? In the morning, none of those things were realized. All was calm; bright, even. I did check the wind gauge, and it wasn’t a hurricane. The bridge was still in place, even if “high sided rigs” were parked in a sense of false security. It was just another moment in autumn.

In a case where “they couldn’t see the forest for the trees”, a young man has been found. Unfortunately, too late. Reported missing in late summer, there were people searching. Rewards for information were offered. And now, almost three months later, the end of the search. I look at the maps (a small island off the coast of another island), and the term search becomes nuanced. My sympathies to his family and friends.

Here’s the thing. I do a lot of research into family histories, my own and others. I’m very much aware of how many records one must go through to find something of actual value. A bit like panning for gold, where you get to toss a large quantity of pebbles aside before finding a nugget worth keeping.
